How Do I Choose The Best Grill Smoker Combos?
Here at GrillBabyGrill we believe that buying a grill and smoker comes down to a few basic things. You want to pay close attention to the heat of the grill if it’s an electric, propane, or natural gas model, then look at the construction and materials of your grill and smoker, followed by its performance, and finally any extras.
None of these are necessarily any more important than the others, but you can disqualify models in order: if it doesn’t get hot enough to grill, move on. If its construction is flimsy, move on. If its performance is low in some area you’d prefer it be higher, move on; and so on.
Heat
The general rule is that your grill should put out 100 BTUh per square inch. This is easier to note if your grill is an electric or gas model (propane or natural gas), but should be noted manually if you’re using a wood or charcoal grill. Always try to find a grill with a good return policy on the last two, so you can test how long it takes the grill to heat up and whether it maintains that heat well.
Construction
Typically, steel is going to be your shell of choice. It is sturdy but lightweight and holds heat well, insulating you and cooking your meat thoroughly.
Your grill should be able to move when it needs to, while remaining rock solid and stationary when you need it to as well, so good wheels and legs are important.
Performance
This is a catchall for everything that isn’t the heat output of the grill. This covers the air-flow first and foremost; no grill is complete without multiple controllable air flow settings for different kinds of smoking.
This is also where you look at things like the longevity of the grill itself, how efficiently the ash and grease trays work (as well as how easy they are to remove and clean, then replace), the temperature control settings for grills with electronic components, the hopper capacity or fuel tank compatibility, and everything else that determines how well the grill will actually function for its intended purpose.
Extras
Once you’ve looked at everything else, use this as a tiebreaker, to see if one grill has a “killer app” that sways you one way or another.
This can be almost anything; multiple grill surfaces is a common one. There are of course plenty of other things, for example: modularity, like having removable or addable pieces (some might have a separate smoker box that comes apart, or a divider that can be used to create multiple grill chambers); digital temperature controls; and automatic hopper feeding and regulation.
Unlike a DIY smoker box, where the capabilities are limited, almost every smoker grill combo on this list has some kind of unique feature that will sway you to buy it. The benefits that the grill can provide is the most significant price factor. The price range can vary from about $100 to over $500, depending on the grill’s quality and extras features.
A simple grill is not necessarily bad, but extra features will come at a premium, and will often make the grill exponentially more convenient to use than a no-frills but vastly cheaper model. It’s entirely up to you whether these features are worth the price hike.
Top 7 Best Smoker Grill Combos Reviews (Updated)
1. Best Overall Smoker Grill Combo – Royal Gourmet CC1830S BBQ Charcoal Grill And Offset Smoker
Why you’ll love this:
The Royal Gourmet grill and smoker combo is the perfect option if you want to enjoy smoked foods, but don’t want to deal with a bunch of fancy features. This basic grill and smoker combo is heated with charcoal and uses offset air flow to distribute heat from the grill chamber to the smoker.
Though this is a basic option, you’ll find that it does come with some nice features, including the front and side tables for prepping foods and holding grill tools, plates or sauces. The side table has three handy hooks that can be used to store grill tools when you’re not using the grill.
What We Liked
- Large Cooking Space and Warming Rack: The cooking space on this grill smoker combo is huge! From the outside the Royal Gourmet doesn’t seem that large, but with 811 square inches of cooking space, you’ll easily be able to entertain a crowd.W
- Generous Prep Space: The Royal Gourmet comes with really nice sided front and side shelves for prepping foods and holding tools, sauces, spices or even a cold beverage or two.
- Versatility: Use the heat from the charcoal grill to create a perfect temperature for the smoker. This grill and offset smoker combo allows you to grill and smoke all of your favorites in a single unit.
- Value for Money: Considering the size alone, you would expect to pay a lot for the Royal Gourmet grill and offset smoker combo, but the surprisingly reasonable price is a huge selling point for this grill.
What We Didn’t Like
- The Legs: This is the most disappointing part of the construction of this grill smoker combo. The wheels are great and the body of the grill and smoker are made from decent materials. The legs are tiny, don’t have good connection points, and don’t handle movement well.
- Temperature Control: Royal Gourmet sells this grill to reach 700°F, but it really struggled to get to 400°F. If you love a perfectly seared steak, you’ll find it difficult to achieve with this grill smoker combo.
- Not as Durable: We mentioned the legs, but we were also surprised to see that the bottom of this grill seemed to be damaged and rusty after just one use. It is probably a good idea to invest in a grill cover to keep this grill smoker combo protected from the elements.
- The Assembly: If you order this grill and offset smoker from an online retailer, you will need to do quite a bit of assembly before you start grilling or smoking. There are a lot of parts, and it takes a good amount of time to put this grill and smoker combo together. It’s not hard, it just takes time.
The offset smoker is small, but good enough for cooking a single meal, and retains heat well. The table running around the front and side of the grill is very handy for prep; I especially like that it is the rare model with a front-mounted shelf for prepping.
The main issue with this one is the flimsy legs. The wheels are fine but the legs in general are cheaply bolted onto the grill body and are just begging to get bent in transport.

2. Runner Up – Z GRILLS ZPG-450A 2022 Upgrade Wood Pellet Grill & Smoker
Why you’ll love this:
Today’s backyard grill masters are starting trade in their old charcoal and gas grills and smokers for wood pellet grills and smokers. The Z Grills 2022 upgraded wood pellet grill and smoker is a great option if you are investing in your first wood pellet grill.
This attractive yet highly functional grill and smoker has a temperature range of 180 to 450 degrees F. This allows you to slow smoke meats and fish, or sear your favorite cut of steak for a flavorful and juicy meal.
The best part of wood pellet grills is that you set the perfect temperature, and head to your lawn chair to relax. The grill does all of the work.
What We Liked
- Large Cooking Space: While not the largest pellet grill and smoker combo out there, this perfectly sized option has 450 square inches of main cooking surface. This is the perfect size for entertaining friends and family at home, and just compact enough to take on the road.
- Temperature Control: With this grill and smoker combo, you’ll never have to miss out on the fun of entertaining and summertime in your backyard. The Z Grills Smart Smoke Technology allows you to set your desired temperature and the grill does the rest.

The grill body is made from steel with a high-temperature powder coating, making this grill rust proof and long lasting. The grates on this grill are porcelain coated cast iron which are easy to clean and made to last.
- Quick & Easy Assembly: There isn’t much to assemble with this grill. It comes mostly assembled right out of the box. You will need to attach some parts, but this is fairly simple and the tools you need are even included.
What We Didn’t Like
- Not as Easy to Clean: Wood pellet grills and smokers make a ton of ash. This is just part of the process. The Z Grills wood pellet grill and smoker is not as easy to clean as others on the market. Despite it being less than convenient, ash needs to be removed after every use to ensure proper heating and auger operation.
- Digital Control: The digital control of this grill is nice, but it can be a bit finicky. The temperature probe needs to be in just the right place and set properly or it will give you an annoying error code.
- No Storage Cabinet: This is a more basic option from the Z Grills line, which is fine because it’s affordable. But we do miss the storage cabinet. It is nice when you can store extra pellets and grilling tools in the grill. Also, the side shelf on this grill is super tiny, and barely holds a can of soda or beer.
The perfect size pellet grill and smoker for families that love to grill and smoke. The Z Grills 2002 upgraded wood pellet grill and smoker is plenty big for feeding your family, thanks to 452 square inches of primary cooking surface.
Fueled by hardwood pellets, every meal that you cook on the Z Grills wood pellet grill and smoker has that delicious, smokey flavor. The digital temperature control allows you to set the proper cooking temperature and walk away. There’s no need to babysit this grill and smoker combo.

3. Best Budget Grill Smoker Combo – Realcook Charcoal BBQ Smoker Grill
Why you’ll love this:
The Realcook charcoal smoker grill is one of the most multifunctional grill and smoker combos on the market. This BBQ smoker-grill has two grills, a smoker and can be disassembled to the base and used as a fire pit. This is really an all-in-one BBQ.
To add to the versatility of the Realcook Charcoal BBQ smoker grill, this handy BBQ can use a variety of fuels. High heat grill or smoke using charcoal or cook low and slow smoking your favorite foods with hardwood pellets.
The best thing about the Realcook is that despite its immense versatility, this smoker grill combo is reasonably priced to fit any budget.
What We Liked
- Large Multi-Functional Cooking: Easy to adjust air dampers located on the base of the smoker-grill allow you to adjust temperatures for a variety of cooking needs. Open the dampers for high heat grilling. Shut down the dampers for low temperature smoking. The multiple levels also allow you to smoke or grill a variety of foods at different temperatures.
- Versatility: This smoker grill combo is designed to be multi-function and convertible. Easily add or remove sections of this smoker-grill thanks to the easy-to-use catch clamps. The Realcook smoker-grill goes from high-capacity smoker to tailgating grill in a matter of minutes.
- Quality Construction: The Realcook smoker grill combo is made from heat-resistant painted steel. It has three sturdy legs so it will stand securely on your patio or deck. Despite being inexpensive, this product is well made and should last for many years.
- Temperature Control: The lid of the Realcook smoker grill combo has a nice thermometer that is actually pretty accurate. The air dampers at the bottom of the grill allow you to adjust the temperature easily.
What We Didn’t Like
- Inadequate Interior Components: Though the interior size and cooking surfaces are perfect for larger cuts of meat, the grilling racks were kind of flimsy. Their longevity in this grill is questionable.
- Not as Easy to Clean: You definitely want to clean your smoker grill combo after every use, but this one isn’t as easy to clean as it seems. If you use a lot of sauce or are cooking a particularly greasy cut of meat, plan on spending a good amount of time cleaning this grill when you’re done cooking
- Not Easy Assembly: Once assembled, the Realcook smoker grill combo is easy to take apart. However, there’s quite a bit of assembly required to get started. Despite being fairly basic, it takes a good 45 minutes to an hour to assemble this grill before cooking.
Multi-function cooking is the name of the game with the Realcook charcoal BBQ smoker grill combo. The three tier cooking system allows you to experiment with a variety of cooking styles.
One BBQ is all you need to bake, smoke, grill, braise, roast, or steam your favorite foods. And though it’s considered a charcoal heated grill and smoker, you can easily use hardwood pellets, to create that delicious smoky flavor that only comes from cooking with wood.
This grill features 636 square inches of cooking surface on two cooking racks. The Realcook smoker is made to handle larger cuts of meat thanks to the large cooking area and the 4 food hangers in the lid.
The easy to read, and accurate smoker thermometer allows you to closely monitor the cooking temperature inside the smoker grill combo. This means that you can easily adjust cooking temperature for perfectly grilled or smoked foods every time.
4. Best Value – Z Grills 2022 Upgrade 700D Wood Pellet Grill & Smoker
Why you’ll love this:
Wood pellet grills and smokers are becoming quite popular with grilling and smoking enthusiasts. The Z Grills wood pellet grill and smoker allows you to perfectly smoke your favorite foods using real wood for that flavor that only comes from wood smoke.
This grill uses an auger system and adjustable speed fan to maintain consistent temperatures within the smoker. This grill and smoker combo easily heats to the maximum temperature of 450 degrees for high heat cooking and searing. It can also maintain a low 180 degrees which is perfect for slow smoking a wide variety of meats.
The Z Grills wood pellet grill and smoker works great and it also will look great on your patio or deck. The included storage cabinet gives the perfect place to store tools and extra pellets. The close cabinet keeps your smoking tools dry and protected from the elements.
What We Liked
- Digitally Temperature Controlled: This pellet grill and smoker features a great digital temperature control system. One of the best on the market, this grill smoker combo perfectly maintains your desired temperature, without you babysitting. With a wide temperature range of 180-450 °F you can perfectly cook everything from pork butts to burgers.
- Large Cooking Space: The 697 square inches of cooking space on porcelain coated, cast iron grates is perfect for feeding four to six people. The Z Grills grill smoker combo is the perfect size for feeding your hungry family.
- Good Hopper Capacity: The hopper of this grill smoker combo holds 20 pounds of hardwood pellets. Since most pellets come in 20 pound bags, you don’t have to worry about what you’ll do with extra pellets. 20 pounds of pellets is the perfect amount for up to 33 hours of smoking time.
- Quality Construction: This great looking grill is made as well as it looks. With heavy-duty steel construction combined with a heat resistant, powder-coat finish, this grill smoker combo is made to last. The Z Grills wood pellet grills also come with porcelain coated cast iron steel grates that will last a long time and are easy to clean.
- Easy Assembly: Z Grills ship their pellet wood grill smoker combo in two boxes. The grill is perfectly packed and arrives in great condition. The assembly is quite easy and the grill comes with everything you need, including tools.
What We Didn’t Like
- Not Great for Small Spaces: If you are looking for a pellet grill and smoker combo and you live in an apartment or have a small outdoor space, this isn’t the option for you. The Z Grills pellet wood grill smoker combo is quite large, and when fully assembled, weighs in at 114 pounds.
- The Hopper: While we love that the hopper of this grill smoker combos is pretty large, it does have one big problem. There is no way to empty the hopper. This is problematic if you want to switch between different hardwood pellets. Unless you’re willing to figure out how to dump out the hopper, you’ll need to learn how much pellets a normal cooking session requires.
- Prep Space: We like the huge storage cabinet, but its disappointing that there isn’t any front or side shelves. You could in theory use the lid for the hopper as prep space, but if you need to add more pellets, you’ll have to take everything off the lid. Its not a huge deal, but it is annoying.
- The Wheels: The casters on the Z Grills wood pellet grill smoker combo were not good. They didn’t roll well, and considering how heavy this grill smoker combo is, it really could have used more functional wheels.
It is an all-in-one versatile grill, being capable of cooking pretty much anything; you can bake, roast, grill, smoke, braise, and barbecue anything you like. This is a good one for making grilled pizzas, which can be surprisingly good if you set it right.
As grill and smoker combos go, this is the best all-rounder you can find. Where some models might do a few things better, most have some kind of tradeoff.

5. Best Three Chamber Grill and Smoker – Oklahoma Joe’s Charcoal/LP Gas/Smoker Combo
Why you’ll love this:
Char-Broil’s Oklahoma Joe’s charcoal and propane grill is a beast made for the grilling and smoking enthusiast. Upgrade from your basic grill or smoker to this huge grill that has two grill chambers, a separate smoker chamber and 1,060 square inches of cooking space.
This grill/smoker combo is one of the most versatile on the market. Each chamber can be heated with either charcoal or propane, and multiple dampers allow you to quickly and easily adjust the internal temperature for perfectly smoked meats.
The grill side of this combo unit features 3 burners each putting out 12,00 BTUs of heat. You can quickly sear steaks for a perfect, juicy result every time.
What We Liked
- Large Cooking Space: The Oklahoma Joes’ grill smoker combo is impressively large. Between the smoker, and the charcoal and gas grills you have 1,060 square inches of cooking surface. It’s hard to find that in other non-professional grills.
- Temperature Control: It was really easy to adjust the temperature on this grill smoker combo. Multiple dampers control the temperature in the charcoal grill and smoke, while three 12,000 BTU burners make temperature control in the gas grill easy.
- Versatility: Not many other products on the market offer you the option for charcoal and gas grilling while you also smoke your favorite meats. This grill really has it all, and it works well, which is a pleasant surprise.
- Quality Construction: You are going to be spending a nice bit of money on this grill smoker combo, so it’s reassuring to know that it is built with longevity in mind. Made with heavy-gauge steel and porcelain coated cast iron grates, this grill is an amazing value and will last you a long time.
- Extra Features: We were sold on the Oklahoma Joe’s grill smoker combo just on the awesomeness of the basics. However, this grill smoker combo has nice extras too. Like the handy storage area, cool to touch handles, and a secure spot for your propane tank.
What We Didn’t Like
- Not as Easy to Move: This grill smoker combo is a beast. It’s quite heavy, weighing in at 205 pounds. Once you get it where you want, you’ll not want to move it again. Also, the wheels are strange. They seem to be an afterthought on this grill.
- Temperature Control: Sure, you get two different grills and a smoker all in one package, but we found it really challenging to maintain the temperature in the smoker. The gas grill is great, but if you’re learning to smoke, you’ll find the temperature control a bit frustrating.
- Keeping Clean: With three chambers, there comes more cleaning. The Oklahoma Joe’s grill smoker combo is fun when you’re grilling and smoking, but it’s not easy to clean, and that’s not fun.
This is an enormous grill and smoker, with two grill chambers and a separate smoker chamber, giving you an enormous amount of cooking space to work with across its three distinct chambers, each usable with either charcoal or liquid propane gas.
The grill is easy to use and light up with electric ignition, and easily regulated, though it does not have digital temperature control.
Other Grill and Smoker Combo Products to Consider
6. Top Vertical Model – Dyna-Glo Signature Series Vertical Offset Charcoal Smoker & Grill
Why you’ll love this:
The Dyna-Glo vertical offset charcoal grill and smoker are a unique take on the grill/smoker combo. This smoker is multi-function and allows you to cook burgers on the grill while you smoke fan favorites like wings or brisket.
The vertical smoker features 5 removable chrome grates that allow you to stack different foods at different heat levels for perfect smoked results, no matter what you’re cooking. The charcoal grill is attached to the smoker and is used to heat the smoker and can also be used for cooking items like hot dogs, brats and burgers.
This grill/smoker combo has thermometers on both the grill door and smoker door so you’ll know exactly what temperature you’re working with so you can easily adjust for the perfect temperature.
What We Liked
- Excellent overall design.
- Small footprint.
- Low price.
- Impeccable construction.
What We Didn’t Like
- Lack of features.
This is a really interesting one. It takes up a bit less space than a regular grill (horizontally, at least) and give you a whole lot of grilling space packed into that fairly compact package. This grill is one of those brands that’s made in the US, and its products have reached many homes.
Each individual grate is fairly small, but all together you’re getting a whopping 1382 square inches of grilling and smoking space, and it makes a killer oven as well. There is no wasted space in this model, giving you a very efficient use of the available cooking area.
The heavy-gauge steel body is incredibly sturdy, and very difficult to accidentally damage or dent, while holding in a lot of heat. The heat resistant handle allows you to open the door without fear even after long sessions of grilling or smoking.
Contrary to first glances this grill and smoker is quite maneuverable, being easy to tilt, and balancing well on its pair of oversized wheels, which roll comfortably. The legs on the opposite side are angled perfectly to increase the wheels’ traction when not in motion, locking it down perfectly when situated where you want it to be.
This is a no-frills grill and smoker combo for the most part; no fancy digital options, and not even a propane or gas hookup—just you, some wood, and an excellently designed vertical smoke chamber that produces great food in a very efficient manner.
7. Best Kamado Style Grill and Smoker – Char-Griller E06614 AKORN Jr
Why you’ll love it:
The Char-Griller Akorn Jr is the perfect grill/smoker if you want to take your grilling and smoking skills on the road. This compact grill and smoker combo is perfect for tailgating, camping or backyard cookouts. The Kamado style grill and smoker works great at high heat and the dual dampers allow you to smoke your favorite meats at a perfect low temperature.
The Akorn Jr. is made to be durable but at the same time perfectly portable. Made from heavy-gauge powder coated steel this grill is designed to move around. Though small, this grill has plenty of cooking space for steaks, wings, and small cuts of brisket or pork.
What we liked
- Affordable pricing for the style of grill.
- Incredibly sturdy construction.
- Excellent heat regulation.
- Good air flow.
- Lightweight and easy to move.
- Kamado style grills create a unique flavor in food and are excellent for baking.
What we didn’t like
- Small cooking surface makes this unsuitable for cooking for large crowds.
While not a true Kamado grill, this affordable alternative makes a great choice for those looking for a new, favorite grill and smoker. The unique domed design and thick, triple-insulated walls hold in heat better than any other type of grill you could name, even the vertical smoker listed above.
The thick steel construction has superior sturdiness to a true Kamado grill (typically made of a far more insulated but more brittle ceramic), though it does not provide the same level of hyper-insulation.
Still, the air flow is excellently designed, providing just enough smoky flavor and heat without masking the actual taste of the meat and whatever spices or sauces you choose to use to enhance it.
The grill and smoker is squat and sturdy, settling well on any terrain while still being fairly easy to move (despite appearances it weighs only 37 lbs and is easy to get a nice “bear hug” grip around when you need to move it).
The cooking surface is only 137 square inches, which is the main drawback, but the quality of the food produced in this grill more than makes up for the lack of quantity it provides, so you’re getting plenty of bang for your buck, especially as this little guy costs about a tenth what a real high-end Kamado style grill and smoker would run you.
8. Top Portable Choice – SUNLIFER Vertical Charcoal Smoker and Grill Combo
Why you’ll love it:
This grill and smoker has a really interesting design, with a 3-tiered and modular construction that lets you use any or all of its pieces to do whatever you want to do. In addition to making it a great versatile grill and smoker that can be used as either a simple camp grill (one tier), smoker grill (two tiers) or dual-tier smoker grill (all three tiers at once), it also becomes very easy to transport and store, breaking down into four component pieces (lid, tier 1, tier 2, and bottom), each of which can be slid or tucked into small areas for storage.
What we liked
- Modular and variable 3-tiered construction gives you a lot of control over how you use this grill.
- Compact, lightweight, and easy to store or transport due to unique construction.
- Heavy-gauge steel is durable and long-lasting.
- Very affordable price.
What we didn’t like
- No electronic ignition.
The grill itself is quite good, having great air flow, good temperature control (though all manual, so you need to pay attention to it), and individual doors for each tier, so you can check one without opening another if you know something definitely needs more time and don’t want to lower the temperature inside.
The exterior looks flimsy at a glance, but it’s actually heavy-grade steel, with a nice heat-resistant, matte black finish.
For the price on offer this is a more than reasonable price, and a great buy for someone looking for a high-quality camp grill and smoker. Excellent for long-term campgrounds or cabins.
FINAL VERDICT
There are many great grills that weren’t mentioned in this review. We focused on grill and smoker combos so that buyers would be able to enjoy the advantage of both. What we can assure is that each of the grills mentioned above is an excellent example of grills in their category, and all are stellar picks if you’re looking for something with their features and in that price range.
The Royal Gourmet CC1830S BBQ Charcoal Grill And Offset Smoker ultimately takes the top spot for me because it is a good example of a grill and smoker combo that doesn’t focus too far on one or the other facet of its design.
As an example, the Dyna-Glo vertical smoker and grill is an excellent smoker…but is far less good at grilling (though it makes a great baking oven as well), due to the unique facets of how it is made.
On the other end, the Char-Griller dual-chambered grill and smoker is a much better grill than it is a smoker, though it performs well enough at the latter to still make it something worth the consideration.
Ultimately this leads me to believe that the Royal Gourmet model is by far the best value for the money, having high-quality basic functions, as well as top-notch and very convenient extras that boost its performance even further. If it’s within your price range, it’s the perfect buy.
Using a Smoker Box
Learning how to use a smoker box is fun and rewarding. Different types of wood chips produce varying results, and you can experiment with the amount you use and even combine them for unique flavors. Using a smoker box can turn ordinary meals into flavorsome lunches and dinners and produce a different tasting experience every time, perfect for your outdoor parties and potlucks. If you want to explore unique outdoor cooking space designs, then a built-in grill can transform your backyard into one of a kind.
