Insulated Grill Jacket

An insulated grill jacket is a tool not everyone will need. Most grills, if built into a fireproof material, are fine just as they are. But sometimes, for whatever reason, a grill is built close to some kind of flammable material. This can be anything from being on a fairly small property and being forced to build your grill close to your wooden patio, to a bit of a mistake in planning that forces you to seek some kind of contingency.

At that point, some kind of heat shielding becomes necessary (not just for your own safety, for legal purposes too).

How To Find The Right Insulated Grill Jacket For Your Grill?

There are some objective qualities to look for when buying your insulated grill jacket.

Grill jackets prevent fire and heat from destroying flammable material. Its principle is similar to BBQ gloves, for it protects your hands from heat. All insulated grill jackets should be made from high-grade stainless steel and very thickly built.

They need to be sturdy and durable, not just for protection from heat (steel is a very poor conductor, so it takes a very long time for heat to bleed through and heat up thick steel) but for longevity; replacing an already installed grill jacket is a huge pain.

The grill jacket should also be pretty simple to install, essentially adding an extra area you need to cut out around the grill and providing its own shelving. If a grill jacket overcomplicates that process, it’s not a very desirable one.

Finally, you should look at price; see if you can get a good deal on them, because some can reach prices as high as an actual grill would. A do it yourself sort of kit with a disassembled model might save you hundreds of dollars in cost, so maybe consider that instead of a pre-assembled option, even though it’s more of a hassle.

However, all of this while important in an abstract sense, is somewhat meaningless at the same time.

You essentially have very little choice between what insulated grill jacket you’re going to buy, whether it’s a top of the line model or not. Thankfully, manufacturers know this, and grill jackets aren’t exactly complicated. In terms of raw quality most insulated grill jackets are utterly identical; they’ll get the job done just as well no matter what option you go with.

No, the most important factor when buying a grill jacket is quite simple: whether it’s made for your model of grill or not. The size, the shape, and everything else about the grill jacket is determined first and foremost by the grill it’s made for.

The size part is fairly obvious; if you have a 36 inch grill, buying a grill jacket made for a 32 inch or 48 inch grill isn’t going to work. Either it will be swamped and lose, or won’t be able to fit inside at all.

The shape is perhaps less obvious. No two grills are exactly the same shape, even if they’re the same size, because manufacturers proportion things a bit differently between them. If you own a 36 inch, 4 burner gas grill made by Blaze, but you don’t like the grill jacket, you may be tempted to find a grill jacket you like better made for 36 inch, 4 burner Coyote grill. However, this is not likely to work out well for you, as it simply won’t work out.

Ultimately, then, this is a list of the best insulated grill jackets more by how common the grill type they’re compatible is, or whether they might fit a range of grills, rather than any quality; the quality doesn’t actually matter beyond a certain point since you’re going to end up buying the only option you have. If you need an insulated grill jacket, it might actually be better to shop for the jacket first, and then the grill afterward if you’re that concerned about jacket quality.

7 Best Insulated Grill Jackets of 2022

1. Blaze Insulated Jacket For 32-Inch 4-Burner Gas Grills – BLZ-4-IJ

Blaze - BLZ-4-IJ

Why you’ll love this:

This is a quite solid insulated grill jacket made for Blaze grills with multiple burners. This particular model is for the 4 burner, 32 inch option, but the overall construction is the same for any of the similar options; the insulated grill jackets for the 2, 3, and 5 burner grills.

The self supporting ledge is great, and adds a little bit of extra durability to your grill, making it a solid option whether you particularly need an insulated grill jacket at all, though paying the price for that marginal benefit alone is a bit iffy to be sure.

The solid stainless steel construction is of course great, and blends in with Blaze grills in general.

The only thing to keep in mind: this is for blaze multi-burner gas grills only, not charcoal grills or the Professional series.

What We Liked

  • Sturdy stainless steel construction.
  • Similar models are made for similar grill styles of different sizes.
  • Self supporting ledge.
  • Easy to install and use.
  • Good price for the quality.

What We Didn’t Like

  • Not compatible with Blaze Professional grills or charcoal models.

2. Coyote Insulated Jacket for 36 inch Gas Grills

Coyote

Why you’ll love this:

This is a solid option if you have a Coyote gas grill. It’s a bit modular in its installation, with two precut holes for gas lines, electricity, or other lines you might need to run.

The construction is pretty great, a well made and thick 18 gauge 304 stainless steel. It’s quite shiny, which may be a plus or demerit depending on your perspective and whether it fits in with the rest of your decorative style.

This one is a bit more limited in versatility, working only with the 36 inch Coyote gas grills. Still, that’s one of the most common and affordable sizes, so it’s not a bad one if you happen to own one of those models.

This is definitely one of the more “take it or leave it” options. It’s well made but not exceptional (save in how good the ventilation is), but it fits a very common and well made grill type. If you have a 36 inch Coyote gas grill, obviously your only choice is this model. Given that, it’s hard to complain about the quality you get.

What We Liked

  • Made for a good, common, and affordable grill type.
  • Solid stainless steel construction.
  • Good ventilation.
  • Versatile install options.

What We Didn’t Like

  • Compatible only with a very narrow subset of grills.

3. Blaze Insulated Jacket with Wind Guard for 32 inch Grills

Blaze - BLZ-IJWG-32

Why you’ll love this:

This is a fairly unique insulated grill jacket, since it comes with a different feature. Most insulated grill jackets are fairly one note. They serve as extra insulation in zones of high fire threat (there are combustible materials within a certain area of your grill).

As a result, most insulated grill jackets are content to do that one job and nothing else. As a grill jacket, this one serves as well as any other. It’s very well made of stainless steel, and is made for a fairly common type of grill (the 32 inch Blaze grills option), so it’s fairly good in that regard.

But the extra bonus is that it doubles as a wind guard. The jacket, along with a BBQ temperature controller, helps keep the flame from blowing out and keeps the wind from cooling down your food every time you open the grill, whipping the heat and smoke away.

However this does come at a price. Literally, not in terms of reduced performance elsewhere. This insulated grill jacket comes at an almost mind boggling price point, costing as much as some fairly high end grills would on its own.

What We Liked

  • Provides a wind shield for windy areas.
  • Sturdy stainless steel construction.
  • Made to fit a very good and relatively affordable grill.

What We Didn’t Like

  • Extremely expensive.
  • Compatible with only a single Blaze grills model.

4. Fire Magic Insulating Liner Kit for Deluxe Classic Countertop Grill

Fire Magic

Why you’ll love this:

This is an interesting one. Rather than coming pre-assembled for easier installation, you get a sort of “do it yourself” install kit for the insulated jacket.

This is a bit of a hassle…but you do save hundreds of dollars off what the price might otherwise be. That’s a sweet enough deal if you’re willing to deal with some extra frustration (and maybe roping a friend into holding your tools).

The construction is good, solid stainless steel and installation isn’t really all that hard in the grand scheme of things.

I’d say the only real drawback is this is only compatible with a single variety of Fire Magic countertop grills. That’s not exactly a common brand, and while they’re not bad grills…the chances are proportionately lower that you’re one of the people that owns one.

If you are though, you get a pretty good deal on this insulated grilling jacket. It shouldn’t be a disappointment in any regard.

What We Liked

  • Relatively inexpensive compared to other insulated grilling jackets.
  • Solid stainless steel construction.

What We Didn’t Like

  • A bit of a hassle to install compared to other options.
  • Compatible with only a single type of fairly uncommon grill.

5. Memphis Grills Heat Shield Kit for Built In Elite and Pro Grill Models

Memphis Grills Heat Shield Kit

Why you’ll love it:

This is a bit of a weird one. Most insulated grilling jackets are a sort of sheathe or box that covers the entire grill. This one is, technically, listed as a “heat shield” but serves roughly the same purpose. It adds a pair of thick steel plates to the sides of the grill, helping to make sure things don’t catch fire around it.

That’s important for the grills this heat shield protector is made for, as unlike the majority of this list they’re pellet grills rather than gas grills, meaning actual combustibles are involved in the operation.

This provides both more and less danger in some ways, so ultimately the heat shield is fine as the rest of the grill is already “jacketed” by default.

Due t0o the simplistic nature, this is also by far the cheapest “insulated grill jacket” on this list, though you more than make up for it in the price of the grill itself to be fair.

As far as built in pellet grills go, the Mephis Grills Pro and Elite models are some of the best around, so there’s a solid chance you have one. If you do, and need a bit of extra safety shielding, this is a great buy.

Check Price on BBQGuys

What we liked

  • Very easy to install; the grills already come with premade mounts to use for this purpose.
  • Made for a fairly common and high quality pair of grill types.
  • One of the only pellet grill compatible grill jackets on the list.
  • Extremely inexpensive compared to other options.

What we didn’t like

  • Not a full insulated grill jacket.

6. American Outdoor Grill Insulating Liner for L/T Series 36 inch Gas Grills

American Outdoor Grill Insulating Liner for L/T Series

Why you’ll love it:

In terms of raw quality, this one probably wouldn’t have made the cut on any normal list. The construction of this one is very unrefined, and is likely to ruin the appearance of your grill if nothing else.

However, this is not a normal list. What matters most is that the grill jacket is compatible with your grill. If it’s not…well, you’re out of luck.

The American Grills brand is a pretty common one to get, and they’re fairly high quality without being exorbitantly expensive.

So, there’s a solid chance you own one, and specifically one of the 36 inch models, which is a pretty common one for a lot of people to get.

Basically, this model is here for one reason: because there’s a good chance you own the grill it goes to. The grill jacket itself is meh at best, but if it’s your only options, then unfortunately it’s your only option.

Check Price on BBQGuys

What we liked

  • Very thick and sturdy construction, though heavy enough that installation may be difficult.
  • Made for the most popular variety of a commonly purchased grill brand.
  • Decent price.

What we didn’t like

  • Fairly meh in terms of actual quality.
  • Very rough look may ruin the appearance of your grill without extra smoothing and burnishing on your end.

7. DCS 54 inch Insulated Grill Jacket for 48 inch Gas Grills with Storage Attachment

DCS

Why you’ll love it:

Rounding us out is this option, a bit of an iffy one, but one I think just eked out its place here. In terms of quality, it’s quite excellent you see. It’s very thick. And it’s polished well enough to look quite nice around your grill, whether it’s pure stainless steel itself or not.

The shelving arrangement is stable and very easy to install, and it’s cut wide for extra protection and long term durability.

However, as well made as this option is, DCS grills are fairly rare. They’re well made, but kind of fall into an awkward pricing and quality position compared to other grills, so you don’t see them as often. However, I imagine plenty of people have picked up a good one on a deep enough discount, so it’s worth showcasing this better than average insulated grill jacket even if it does go with a single size of a fairly niche grill brand.

Check Price on BBQGuys

What we liked

  • Extremely thick and sturdy construction.
  • Highly durable and built to last.
  • Easy to install.
  • Stable.
  • Looks good.

What we didn’t like

  • Made for a fairly uncommon grill type.

FINAL VERDICT

Blaze BLZ-4-IJ

Obviously, it’s impossible to pin down the absolute best options to keep your indoor grill safe for use because the quality of these insulated grilling jackets is entirely dependent on the grill they go to. Even if they were absolute trash (which I went out of my way to be sure wasn’t the case, here), that might be the only option you could possibly have to go with. Sometime you can gamble on a 3rd party solution, or using a grilling jacket made for a different brand’s grill of the same size, but it’s just that: a gamble. That should be avoided unless there’s no other choice.

Ultimately the Blaze grills insulated jacket takes the top spot due to a confluence of being individually good and going with a very common and high quality grill.

It needs to be mentioned that a heat shield could mean an insulated jacket that protects surrounding flammable materials from the heat of the grill, or it could mean a flame tamer used as a fire barrier for the burner of grill. Blaze offers both types of products.
